The total spending of visitors to Macau, excluding gaming, grew by 35.9% year-on-year to MOP$20.35 billion (US$2.53 billion) in 1Q24 – also up by 20.2% from the same period in 2019.
According to information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC), this included MOP$16.43 billion (US$2.04 billion) in spending from overnight visitors, up 33.1% year-on-year, and MOP$3.92 billion (US$488 million) from same-day visitors, up 48.5%.
Per-capita spending of MOP$2,293 (US$285) was also 40.3% higher compared to the same quarter of 2019.
By visitor source, per-capita spending of visitors from mainland China fell by 31.6% year-on-year to MOP$2,665 (US$332) and from Hong Kong by 14.4% to MOP$1,071 (US$133), while spending of those from Taiwan grew by 10.6% to MOP$2,040 (US$254).
In comparison with the same quarter of 2019, per-capita spending of visitors from mainland China increased by 44.1%, from Hong Kong by 19.0% and from Taiwan by 39.8% respectively.
Spending of those from Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, Japan and Malaysia recorded varying degrees of growth, DSEC said.
Shopping comprised 48.0% of the total spend in 1Q24, followed by accommodation at 23.3% and food & beverage at 20.9%.
